2015 saw a staggering increase in migrants leaving Syria and surrounding countries to enter the EU. Though many fled as refugees of civil war and severe instability, many others viewed the exiting wave as an opportunity to pass borders without hassle. Aside from certain security issues the incoming flux has caused, there have been questions about economic support and future social consequences.

 

This year’s IASMUN ECOSOC committee will be discussing the current state of the economic platform provided for these immigrants as well as debating possible solutions to shortcomings. It is important to consider not only the wealth of these host EU nations but also their social stances and norms. Perhaps certain precautions must be made to ensure the safety of citizens and migrants both.
