UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL

CHAIR: BHAWESH VASNANI

DEPUTY CHAIR: BARTEK PYSZKOWSKI
TOPIC: SOUTH CHINA SEA CONFLICT

This year in the Security Council of IASMUN, the topic of debate will be the South China Sea dispute. The topic fits completely into the theme of Asian Instability. The dispute has been ongoing for centuries, yet there is no solution to it which is unanimously accepted. This year’s IASMUN SC gives delegates the opportunity to present their solutions to the conflict.

In every United Nations assembly the Security Council is the most important council.  It has been one of the committees which the UN was founded with. It’s been the primary council responsible for maintaining international peace, with the rights to impose sanctions, P5 Veto rights, and P5 meetings. Over the years, the council has discussed various topics from various origins.

The South China Sea dispute is one of the most prolonging conflicts. This is a dispute where China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia and Brunei are all making territory claims. The reason all these countries are making claims for the area, is because Paracels and Spratlys (islands), are surrounded by natural resources which will benefit any country who gets the land. All the countries which are making claims have reasons, which they seem fit, to do so. This is why the debates on this year’s Security Council will be truly unique.
