HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL

CHAIR: JAN KWASNIAK

DEPUTY CHAIR: ANNA TEYTEL

Site Title

The job of the Human Rights Council is the protection of individuals, cultures and solving disputes and controversies of global significance concerning us humans. We aim to solve the issue with the spirit of cooperation between all nations present in the committee while preserving individual rights and the values of numerous cultures.  With the unprecedented development of technology we  live in the so-called "global village" and these issues have an enormous effect on us . Hence, we must look at all pressing issues with the new insightfulness and joint effort of all nations.

The issue of the treatment of individuals in the Muslim countries in the Middle East and North Africa has been a very controversial topic that has spawned many debates. The main question presented is the dispute of the importance of individual rights versus the cultural identity of the region. Which issue is more valuable and how to determine it is the main question of the debates. It spins on numerous axis’s and involves many themes such as the local law system, capital punishment and supposed persecution of minorities. The issue must be addressed on numerous levels with special emphasis on the rights of women in the region

.

The treatment of women in the said region is at least a debatable topic. Is that particular treatment justifiable by the cultural background or it’s an infringement of human rights? Is it correct to perceive the world through the prism of only one culture and disregard the beliefs, practices, and traditions of others? Or is it correct to have a universal set of rights applicable to every society? Are the traditions a form of respect, or maybe are they a form of persecution and discrimination? It’s too early to make any judgments without in-depth research and consideration of the topic from both subjective and objective points of view.

Here in Human Rights Council, we must find an optimal solution that will satisfy the nation states present. It’s our job to provide a solution as we look from not only our own, subjective perspective, but also from the perspective of the state we represent and of course from an objective point of view. We must bear in mind the respect that we have for different cultures and beliefs, but also note the importance of individual rights, needs and wants. This  is what HRC is about- the union of individual and collective safety and dignity, and this is our goal in the 2017 IASMUN.
