Vice-Chair: Wojtek Kurek

SECURITY COUNCIL GUIDE IS NOW AVAILABLE!

Topic: Main Topic:  Issues of sovereignty in Western Sahara

The UN Security Council has a responsibility to ensure global peace. As one of its delegates, you are formally required to understand your country’s role and position on this matter and help resolve the conflict.

The region of Western Sahara was subject to Spanish colonization. However, once they left, two thirds of the area was left to Morocco and the southern third was left to Mauritius. Ironically, those who were already living in the area, the Sahrawi people, did not receive a chance to voice their opinions.

Since 1975, the Kingdom of Morocco and the Algerian-backed Sahrawi rebel national liberation movement, known as the Polisario Front, has been at war. Now, several decades later, Western Sahara is under confusion. To whom does this land belong to: the Sahwrawi people, The Kingdom of Morcco, or Mauritius? What about the refugees that have been displaced by the conflict?

It is crucial to understand the history of the Western Saharan conflict and its future. Figuring out why and how the key players cannot come to an agreement is a necessity. Now, it is the delegates’ duties to create a sustainable resolution to this conflict.
